ZUGFeRDPDF/A-3 + UN/CEFACT CII

Open a ZUGFeRD file

ZUGFeRD is Germany's hybrid e-invoice format — a PDF with an embedded XML invoice. Our free viewer extracts the structured invoice data automatically and displays it in readable form in your browser.

What is ZUGFeRD?

ZUGFeRD combines a human-readable PDF (PDF/A-3) with machine-readable XML data (UN/CEFACT CII) in a single file. From version 2.1 onwards, ZUGFeRD is technically identical to the French format Factur-X. Older versions (1.0, 2.0) use a slightly different XML schema.

Who sends it?

ZUGFeRD is used primarily by German businesses in B2B contexts. Most major German accounting software (DATEV, Lexware, SAP) can create and read ZUGFeRD invoices.

Mandate context

ZUGFeRD 2.1+ meets the requirements of Germany's e-invoicing mandate for B2B invoices. Issuance becomes mandatory from January 2027 (large companies) and January 2028 (all others) for domestic B2B transactions.
